For general detection of pipelines and cables, use medium and high frequencies. These frequencies travel farther and do not sense too much signal to other pipelines. Low frequency is suitable for long distance tracking. Low frequency signal travels a long distance and does not sense other pipelines. Low frequency signals are also suitable for long distance and well insulated transmission lines.


Generally consists of two major components.


1. transmitter: to the measured pipeline to apply a special frequency signal current, generally using the direct connection method, induction and clamping method three detection modes.


2. Receiver: receiver built-in induction coil to receive the magnetic field signal of the pipe, the coil generates induction current, so as to calculate the direction and path of the pipe. Generally there are three receiving modes: peak mode (maximum value), valley mode (minimum value), broad peak mode; in addition, now more advanced instruments are generally with peak arrow mode (combining the advantages of both peak and valley, making the operation more intuitive) and compass guidance (for indicating the direction of the pipeline).

Two types of principles


1 . One type is the use of electromagnetic induction principle to detect metal pipelines, electric / fiber optic cables, and some non-metallic pipelines with metal marker lines, this type is referred to as pipeline detector.


Advantages: fast detection, simple and intuitive, easy to operate, high accuracy.


Disadvantages: detection of non-metallic pipelines, you must use the non-metallic probe, this method is more laborious to use, the need to invade the interior of the pipeline.


2. Another category is the use of electromagnetic waves to detect all materials of underground pipelines, can also be used to find buried objects underground, commonly known as radar, also known as pipeline radar.


Advantages: can detect all materials of pipelines.


Disadvantages: high requirements for the environment, poor depth measurement ability (difficult to check the buried deeper pipelines), high requirements for the quality and experience of the operator.


Any instrument is not perfect and needs to be used in conjunction to bring out their best.
